Job Description and Duties
Working under the supervision of a Caltrans Tree Maintenance Supervisor, the incumbent operates equipment identified as Category 1 and Category 2 used by assigned unit and works individually or with a crew performing tasks related to highway tree maintenance work. Must possess a valid Class A driver's license with Tank endorsement; Hazardous Materials endorsement is desirable. Perform heavy manual labor by engaging in all tree crew activities including climbing. This is a part-time traveling crew and could be required to work out of town up to 50% of the time with per-diem reimbursement.
When not operating equipment, accomplish tasks normally performed by the assigned unit including but not limited to trim or removes limbs and branches; uses both power and handsaws and similar equipment; treats cut surfaces to protect from fungi and insects; lower cut limbs and branches by lines; occasionally falls and removes entire tree; plants cultivates and irrigates trees; cuts brush and weeds along the transportation facility right of way, and in state facilities; maintain and cares for trimming equipment; performs traffic control; uses aerial equipment and pneumatic and hydraulic tools; and operates brush chipper to remove cut vegetation from job site along with any other duties that would normally be assigned to a Highway Tree Maintenance Worker or Highway Maintenance Worker.
Equipment Care: Servicing, minor repairs, adjustments, emergency repairs, cleaning of equipment and keeping all pertinent records.
Record Keeping and Reporting: Crew report forms, pre and post-operative equipment checks, fuel purchases/usage, Material usage reports.

Working Conditions
Position located at 90 W Lake Mendocino Dr., Ukiah, Mendocino County.
This is a Limited Term position which may be extended to 24 months or become permanent.
Special Requirements
The position(s) require(s) a valid California Drivers License (CDL). You must answer the questions addressing your CDL on your application. Ensure you provide your CDL number, class, expiration date, and any endorsements and/or restrictions.
The position(s) require(s) a Drug Screening be passed prior to being hired.

Minimum Qualifications:
Either I
One year of experience in the California state service performing the duties of a Caltrans Equipment Operator I.
Or II Two years of experience in the California state service performing the duties of a Caltrans Highway Maintenance Worker, Caltrans Landscape Maintenance Worker, or Tree Maintenance Worker.
Or III Either : 1. Three years of experience in the California Department of Transportation performing the duties of a Service Assistant (Maintenance) including training in and operation of heavy or complex maintenance or construction equipment. or 2. Two years of experience within the last five years (this time limitation is extended for a period equivalent to that spent in recognized military service during the last five years) in operating highway, structure, emergency service, landscape, or construction equipment. or 3. Possession of certification as a Heavy Equipment Operator Technician from a college or university accredited by the California Superintendent of Public Instruction, or a college or university approved by the Bureau on Private Postsecondary and Vocational Education, under the provisions of California Education Code Chapter 3, Part 59, Division 10.

In addition to evaluating each candidate's relative ability, as demonstrated by quality and breadth of experience, the following factors will provide the basis for competitively evaluating each candidate:
Must have knowledge of materials, methods, equipment, and tools used in highway maintenance and construction; provisions of the California Vehicle Code as it pertains to the loading and operation of motor vehicles; and rules and regulations pertaining to highway maintenance practices.
Possession of a valid Class “A” California Commercial Driver License with a minimum of tank endorsement. Possession of a hazardous material endorsement desirable but not required.
Ability to work safely around high-density traffic. Ability to work effectively alone or with others.
Must be able to analyze various work situations accurately and make sound decisions
May work irregular shifts, nights, or weekends as required.
Much of this position is labor intensive. Incumbent must have physical ability to react quickly to errant motorist and do strenuous hand and mechanical labor. Benefits
